The Scan Bran Challenge

After returning from holiday I noticed that Twitter was awash with mentions of the Scan Bran Challenge. I knew Scan Bran was some sort of Slimming World food, but had never really paid much attention to it or ever thought about eating it. However, I was told that it might speed up weight loss so I thought I would give it a go particularly given my holiday indulgences. Before I started I did an unofficial weigh in on my home scales and they said I'd gained 2lbs over the holiday.

My scan bran challenge started last Wednesday, and I have to say I struggled from the first bite. I found them like cardboard, and incredibly difficult to swallow, however I used them. I tried having them with cheese and cherry tomatoes, having them dipped in my pasta sauce, having them with hot milk in the morning, as a cake made with eggs and muller light, and finally with some really nice posh ham. The latter was the most edible, but still a struggle, and a pint of water was required with every scan bran. One day I even ended up in bed for an afternoon because I was getting really bad stomach cramps from eating them.

However, I stuck with it. I ate my 5 a day until Monday's weigh in, where I gained 1.5lbs. As my unofficial weigh in had put me at a 2lb gain pre-scan bran this means scan bran only helped me lose 0.5lbs - definitely not worth it!

Others on twitter seem to have had some brilliant losses with the scan bran challenge, whilst some have been like me and had small losses or maintains, so I'm glad I tried it. However, it didn't work for me, and I will never ever have another scan bran again.

  1. The stuff sounded vile from the word go. I think your better off without it. You were doing really well without any gimmicky stuff.

  2. Scan bran is evil stuff! I have made an ok (ish) chocolate cake, well I say ok, but only if you don't compare it to 'actual' chocolate cake!

  3. I tried the scan bran challenge for a week only eating 2 scan bran every day as i can't stomach the stuff either i found eating it with ham and coalslaw and washing each bith down with a mouthfull of diet coke was the only way i could do it. I had a 4lb wait loss which i was so happy about because i was stuck for a long time this took me to having my first stone of. Im trying the challenge again this week but im not sure if it will work as i haven't been very good eating popcorn and muffins :-(

  4. I crumble scan bran on top of soups or chili that way you don't have to chew or wash down with pints of water

  5. I made the Scan Bran chocolate cake and threw it in the bin - it was vile!

Too many Scan Brans also give me stomach cramps, so after I'd finished the two packets Id bought I promised I would never get them again. Slimming World really shouldn't peddle this rubbish!

  6. My wife was introduced to Scan Bran a few weeks ago and have been told there is an in joke at her slimming world club as what it can be used for.

Also that it is like Marmite you either love it or hate it.

  7. I tried scan bran but have it with banana but must admit prefer Ryvita but take scan bran every 2nd or 3rd day with banana and a little spoon of muller yogurt and it seems to work, or a piece of cheese , its ok but only every 2 or 3 days .

  10. Making it as a Jamaican ginger cake was good, the spices and carrot totally disguised most of the original taste! Going to make it again!
